Where It All Began

Born in a Time of Change

Channel Islands Flowers was born in 2020, a time when the world — and especially the floral industry — was facing deep uncertainty in the aftermath of the pandemic. Amid this challenge, our founder, Manuel Ayala, saw not just difficulty, but opportunity.

At the time, Manuel was working for Sun Valley Group, where he and his team cultivated a variety of beautiful flowers in the Oxnard fields. When the company announced the closure of those fields, Manuel realized two things: the market would soon be left without those blooms — and his loyal field team would soon be without work.

Rooted in Courage and Community

With courage, heart, and determination, Manuel decided to act. On August 1, 2020, Channel Islands Flowers opened its doors for the very first time. What began as a small, family-run company with just 16 workers — all former Sun Valley employees — quickly grew into something much larger.

At first, Channel Islands Flowers produced blooms that Sun Valley continued to sell and distribute on commission. The success of that first year exceeded all expectations, allowing the company to expand rapidly. Soon, new crops were planted — including over 5 million Iris and 820,000 Lilies, both Oriental and Asiatic.

Turning Challenges into Growth

Growth, however, is never without challenge. In 2024, the company faced one of its most defining moments when Sun Valley announced it could no longer sell or distribute Channel Islands’ flowers — and gave only one month’s notice. Rather than being defeated, Manuel and his team turned this obstacle into a new beginning.

With resilience and vision, Channel Islands Flowers established its own warehouse and began building direct relationships with wholesalers in the Los Angeles Flower Market. The company also gained the trust and support of Trader Joe’s and other partners dedicated to promoting U.S.-grown flowers.
